Johnson's Shut-Ins is a Missouri state park where the East Fork of the Black River squeezes through ancient rock, forming chutes, pools and small falls you can swim and slide in. Entry is free, there is no lifeguard, and food, coolers, alcohol and pets are not allowed in the shut-ins area.

Water data

Readings show flow or level, not water safety.

The park's 75 cfs rule applies to its own river reading; the USGS gauge above is a nearby reference, not the park's official measurement.

How a visit works

Drive to the shut-ins parking lot and walk the trail to the river. In summer the lot often fills by mid-morning, so arrive early or plan to use the northern day-use area. Leave the cooler and snacks in the car: the park bans food and disposable bottles on the trail and at the rocks, so bring a refillable water bottle instead.

At the water, the rock is smooth and slippery, pools drop off suddenly, and current runs through the chutes. Wear water shoes and put a life jacket on children. If the water is high, staff close the access gates and swimming is not allowed.

Not confirmed

More Missouri spots are on the Missouri hub. Across the state line, the Buffalo National River has a similar clear Ozark river feel.
