Planning the trip
Balmorhea sits in far West Texas, a long way from any big city, so most visitors combine it with a West Texas road trip. Because entry is sold in a morning and an afternoon block, pick one and arrive near the start. On busy days staff send extra cars to the county road; do not park on the state highway shoulder.
The deep end is genuinely deep, and certified divers can explore it for a small extra fee.
